Insurance
IT always came as a surprise to hear that there was no legal requirement for aircraft or their operators to hold insurance. Last year, it has all changed with new European Union laws requiring all pilots to carry third party public liability insurance and passenger liability cover.

At Microlight Scotland, we are insured for £1,000,000 for bodily injury and third party liability through Robert Fleming Insurance Brokers. A copy of the certificate is available for inspection at the airfield and can be viewed online by clicking on the picture on the left.

This insurance covers student pilot's while an instructor is in the aircraft with them - it does not cover student pilots while they fly solo. Under the new EU rules, student pilots must now arrange their own third party insurance of at least £750,000 before flying solo. This will cost around £100 a year.

You are responsible - if you want it - for arranging your own personal injury insurance if flying solo and for arranging your own hull insurance if flying your own aircraft. Neither of these are required by law.

Learning to fly should not affect your life insurance premiums. In most cases, where insurers have wanted to raise the premium, specialist brokers have found increased cover at a reduced cost! Modern-day microlighting really is very safe.
